Practical questions

STI testing during a period: ask before cancelling

Starting your period before an STI appointment does not automatically mean every test must be postponed. Blood testing, different swabs and examination have different requirements. Collection instructions can differ by laboratory platform, so the safe answer is to ask the service about the exact test rather than follow a universal online rule.

Tell the service what appointment is planned

Say whether you are attending for symptoms, a blood test, a urine specimen or a vaginal swab. Ask which parts can proceed and whether menstrual bleeding affects their particular kit. Some sexual-health services allow their tests during a period, while other collection instructions differ; neither statement should be extended to every possible assay.

Keep symptoms separate from collection convenience

Pelvic pain, unusual discharge or bleeding that is not your normal period may need assessment even if a particular specimen is delayed. Tell the clinician about pregnancy possibility and pain. Do not decide that new or heavy bleeding is menstrual simply because the appointment falls near the expected period.

Follow your actual kit, without improvising

If you are using an approved self-collection kit, read its instructions and ask about menstrual products, specimen collection and return timing if unclear. Do not douche, use internal antiseptics or change the collection method to make the sample seem cleaner. If the service advises postponement, ask for a definite replacement date and instructions.

Do not delay urgent exposure advice

If there was a recent possible HIV exposure, emergency contraception concern or sexual assault, seek prompt medical advice rather than waiting for the period to finish. A routine specimen question should not delay time-sensitive assessment. This guide does not confirm local testing availability, collection rules or access to a specific treatment.

Common questions

Does menstruation make every STI test inaccurate?

No. Requirements depend on the test and specimen. Confirm your own laboratory’s instructions.

Should I cancel a symptom assessment myself?

Contact the service first. Important symptoms may still need assessment even if one specimen is postponed.

Should I clean internally before a swab?

Do not improvise internal cleansing. Follow the supplied kit instructions and ask the service if unsure.
